"You just keep on pushin' my love Over the borderline" (Madonna) The Town Line Diner is appropriately named, being on the borderline between Rocky Hill and Wethersfield. One of the professional organizations I belong to met there this morning for a 7:30 breakfast meeting to plan our March, April and May events. Their massive breakfast menu was well represented at our table with big plates full of eggs, omelets, pancakes, hash browns, toast and bacon. Our server was friendly and efficient, and offered numerous refills of Town Line's very good coffee. I went light on breakfast because we're off to Pennsylvania Dutch country for a long weekend and I know that will be trouble for me calorie wise. I started my day with three scrambled eggs, sliced tomatoes (instead of potatoes) and one slice of dry whole wheat toast. My eggs were perfectly cooked and the tomato slices were ripe and pretty large. So top notch food and service combined to give us a terrific experience at Town Line.
WHY five stars for a basic type diner, you may ask? My criteria are all part of our unique experience today. Here's the story: The hubby wanted Chinese to start so we headed out to wang palace. We've gone so often that I was once the Yelp " Duchess of wang" (insert joke here) wang is now closed for dine in. We headed out to the next closest Chinese- Ming dynasty. SAME dine in closure! Noooooo! So we look to our right--Town Line Diner looms like an oasis in the Chinese desert. We look at each other, shrug and walk in. Uh oh, place is empty. Not a great sign. We are greeted so quickly by a lively woman with an accent, they are family run from Albanian descent. Totally cool lady! She seats us comfortably and sets us up. Hubby asks about the fried chicken versus Turkey club--she said no to the fried chicken, as today's "looks ugly". Haha!! He gets the Turkey club & I get Turkey dinner. Mine comes with salad, a veggie side, cranberry sauce, gravy, stuffing and mashed potato. Holy moly when we get our meals it's like Thanksgiving! Mounds of White meat Turkey over mounds of stuffing, with mounds of mashed potato. WOW!! Hubby's is equally mound-ful. Was it the best I ever had? No, but wonderful comfort food. We sit together happily chatting for quite a while and are made to feel comfortable staying. An obvious regular walks in and she greets him, asks how he is. He replies,"old & cranky!" Everyone laughs. It's like being part of the old cheers show sitcom! Now for the sweetest part of the story- dessert. I am stuffed like a Turkey, and he had a nice chocolate fresh made milkshake. We go to checkout and I am eyeing all the wonderful desserts. She offers me and I decline---soooo full!! She insists I take a dessert of my choice, no charge?! Before I know it, I'm holding two large baklava plus a doggie bag for home. Yay!! Yes, It's not fancy food or a curated perfect atmosphere, but for good old fashioned reasonably priced comfort food that feels like home?? Well...here they will make you Happy, happy, happy.
Everytime I come here it just gets better and better since my last review. But today, this was it. I had to change my review. For the 5th time in a row, the service was amazing. Quick and overly friendly. I love it. But every aspect of my simple breakfast was at the best quality it could have been. Sometimes you just don't feel like making breakfast so you go out to get it. This is my place for that especially after this visit. My bacon was thick and cooked perfectly, my over easy egg was just like how I'd make it at home (perfect haha), french fries were hot (I know it's early but I wasn't feeling homefries today), this waffle looked like a stock photo on google (fluffy and golden), my spinach, pastrami and swiss omelet made me like omelets again. I don't think anything could have been done better if you want it as simple as I wanted it. Even coming here not expecting much out of their fish and chips, I got a solid meal with homemade tartar sauce. The fish didn't even seem frozen. I was pleasently surprised as I knew I was taking a risk ordering fish at a diner but now, I'm super comfortable with it! I notice a bump in quality over the last few months so I can't say anything except keep it up. It's nothing fancy but the quality is the one problem I had with this place in the past. Proud of what this place has came to be knowing it just kept disappointing me in the past. The consistent bump in quality is what really caught my attention. After today, I decided I've had enough and needed to praise them for this. So if you want a simple meal and don't expect much out of it but at least hope it's done right, this is your place. No other way to explain it.
As one of the last 24/7 diners in the area, open even on Christmas day, this place was a beacon when there were no others. Sadly, Town Line Diner appears to be no more. A prominent "coming soon" bearing the name of its future replacement can be seen in the front window.
